Sarwar challenged to apologise to 'betrayed' WASPI campaigners

THE SNP called on Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar to meet with “betrayed” Waspi campaigners at Holyrood today and apologise.

Mr Sarwar has come under fire since the UK Labour government ruled out any compensation to women born in the 1950s who saw their retirement age rise rapidly with little communication from successive governments.

SNP MSP Clare Haughey pointed to a now deleted social media post by Mr Sarwar stating “under my leadership, Waspi women will finally receive the justice they deserve.”

She said: “Before he became Labour party leader in Scotland, Anas Sarwar promised to compensate the Waspi women, but as soon as Keir Starmer said otherwise, Anas Sarwar fell meekly back in line.

“Anas Sarwar has used the Waspi women as a photo-op and betrayed them the second his Labour Party got into office. It is a disgrace and he should be ashamed.

“Now is his chance to meet with the Waspi women in Parliament, look them in the eye and apologise.

“Unlike the Labour Party, the SNP stands behind the Waspi women in their quest for justice.”
