Scottish government cuts have damaged culture, Holyrood committee says

MILLIONS in funding cuts to culture have considerably damaged the sector, according to a Holyrood committee today.

The constitution, Europe, external affairs & culture committee report — which warns of an ongoing “perfect storm” in arts funding — comes just weeks after Creative Scotland revealed a £6.6 million cut in funding from the SNP-Green Scottish government would leave it reliant on reserves in the coming year.

A backlash from Scotland’s artistic community led to First Minister Humza Yousaf’s subsequent pledge to “more than double” culture spending — with a price tag of more than £100m over five years.

However, as the process to set the Scottish government’s budget whirrs into action over the coming weeks, the committee has called for detail on how the pledge will be honoured.

Committee convener the SNP’s Clare Adamson said there was “an urgent need for the Scottish government to restore the confidence of Scotland’s culture sector.”

A Scottish government spokesman said: “We will continue to do everything within our powers and resources to help those in the culture sector most affected by current economic challenges.”
