Scottish Labour demands investigation into anti-semitic blog

SCOTTISH Labour demanded an investigation yesterday after several SNP social media accounts promoted an article that extensively quotes Adolf Hitler and attacks a Jewish trade unionist.

Labour MSP Neil Findlay sent a letter to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon demanding an investigation into how a “vile anti-semitic blog” has been shared on various SNP pages on Facebook and Twitter.

Grouse Beater, a blog which is vocally supportive of Scottish independence and the SNP, published an article on Sunday headed: “GMB – a cockney clique.”

The piece attacks the GMB, the union which played an important role in organising last week’s strike by mostly female workers at SNP-controlled Glasgow City Council.

The union is accused of being “another wing of the campaign to Bring Back the Great British Empire” due to its opposition to Scottish independence.

However, the post singles out GMB official Rhea Wolfson for abuse, calling her a “demagogue.”

It also discusses Hitler’s book Mein Kampf, paraphrasing the nazi leader’s claims about Jewish people “gradually assuming leadership of the trade union movement.”

The article accused Ms Wolfson, who is Jewish, of having a “messianic resolve” to portray herself as a victim.

It went on to say: “Whether or not Wolfson is intellectually aware of Hitler’s outlook is unknown, but she certainly knows how to make the most of [anti-semitism].”

The article has been shared by numerous SNP outlets, including its Edinburgh East Twitter page and the party’s Facebook page for Livingston East, which covers part of the Livingston constituency where Ms Wolfson is Labour’s parliamentary candidate.

Two West Lothian SNP councillors have shared it, as has the campaign page of Veronica Smith, Carl John and Frank Anderson, three SNP council candidates in East Calder and East Livingston, who called the article an “interesting read.”

Mr Findlay urged Ms Sturgeon to immediately suspend any SNP members who shared the offensive article.

“Our parties clearly have different views in the role of the trade union movement in Scotland, but regardless of that we should stand united against hatred and racism,” he said.

An SNP spokesperson said: “The SNP is resolute in our unqualified condemnation of anti-semitism in all its forms.

“The blog should not have been shared by any SNP member and Rhea Wolfson deserves a full apology from the author for the clear offence that has been caused.”
