Sheffield stages march for climate justice

ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners staged protests in Britain and worldwide on Saturday demanding action to stop climate change and simultaneously calling for a free Palestine.

Climate banners mingled with Palestinian flags and placards in Sheffield, where Sheffield TUC and Climate Justice Coalition South Yorkshire marched together.

Sheffield TUC secretary Martin Mayer said: “Workers and their families know that climate change is happening: the weather is changing, we’ve had devastating floods and extreme temperatures, including more wildfires.

"We need a properly funded government programme to green our economy, create good green jobs and ensure a just transition so no-one is left behind.”

A Climate Justice Coalition South Yorkshire statement said: “It’s up to us to create a liveable planet.

“We must dismantle the fossil fuel economy, begin a worker-led just transition, and tackle local, national and global injustices head-on.”

The group called for “an immediate ceasefire, a stop to the blockade and occupation of Palestine, and the end to apartheid and colonialism.”
