MEN’S SPEEDWAY: Dan Bewley top-scored with 14+1 points as defending champions Belle Vue lost only one heat on their way to a comfortable 57-33 Premiership victory over King’s Lynn on Monday evening in Manchester.

Belle Vue also bagged the extra point for a 103-77 aggregate win.

Monday’s other meeting saw Dan Thompson lead the way with 15 points from six rides as Ipswich raced to a narrow 47-43 win at Birmingham.

MEN’S CRICKET: Hampshire and Nottingham were the only teams to claim wins in the opening round of County Championship Division One matches.

Notts beat Durham by eight wickets on Monday after Hampshire had seen off newly promoted Yorkshire by five wickets.

Reigning champions Surrey batted their way to a losing draw at Essex, Worcester held on for a share of the spoils at Somerset and Warwickshire drew with Sussex.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Defending champions Botofogo will look to recover from their opening defeat to Universidad de Chile when they meet Carabobo in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

The Venezuelans also lost their first Group A game 2-0 to Argentina’s Estudiantes.

Among tomorrow’s other fixtures Argentinian champions Velez Sarsfield are in Paraguay to face Olimpia and Ecuador’s Barcelona visit Belgrano, Buenos Aires to take on River Plate.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: Alex Ovechkin scored his 895th career goal to become the highest all-time scorer in America’s National Hockey League when his Washington Capitals team went down 4-1 at home to the New York Islanders.

The Russian left-winger beat the record that had been set by Wayne Gretzky in 1999.

Washington are currently top of the Eastern Metropolitan conference and have already qualified for the Stanley Cup play-offs.
