South Western Rail strike in December including NYE over guard jobs

WORKERS on South Western Rail are to strike on December 22,  27 and 31 in their long-running battle to keep safety-critical guards on trains.

In common with Northern Rail, South Western Rail is determined to abolish the guards’ jobs, despite their role in helping passengers in times of difficulties, ranging from derailments to on-board anti-social behaviour.

The government is supporting the companies’ plans and has ensured that the taxpayer foots the bill for any profits lost by the companies due to strike action.

Strike action is being organised by rail union RMT.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “Recent figures have shown a shocking surge in violence on our railways across the festive season and it is frankly appalling that South Western Railway are looking for a green light to throw the guard off their trains as and when they see fit in the name of profit.”
