CYCLING: Britain’s men and women’s team sprint squads both picked up silver as the Netherlands bagged three gold medals on day one of the Track Cycling World Championships in Chile.

Katie Archibald claimed silver behind Ireland’s European champion Lara Gillespie in Thursday night’s women’s elimination race, before the British women’s two-time defending champions team pursuit squad were beaten into third by Italy and Germany on Friday morning.

MEN’S RUGBY UNION: South African front-row forward Jan-Hendrik Wessels has received a nine game suspension after being found guilty of grabbing an opponent’s genitals during last week’s Pretoria Bulls match at Connacht.

Wessels, who won the most recent of his 10 caps for the Springboks during their recent Southern Hemisphere Rugby Championship title win, will miss the upcoming autumn internationals against Japan, Ireland, France and Italy.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: The Scottish Cup second round continues on Saturday with all 10 League Two teams joining the action.

Table-topping Spartans meet second-placed East Kilbride, while three-time winners Clyde host Annan Athletic.

Among the other fixtures, 2006’s runners-up Gretna, who currently sit bottom of the Lowland League, are at Auchinleck Talbot and Johnstone Burgh continue their first ever cup appearance with a visit to Falkirk-based Camelon Juniors.

CYCLING: Next year’s men’s Tour de France will start in Barcelona with a modified team time trial, spend three days in Spain before featuring two mountain top finishes on Alpe d’Huez and again use the Montmatre circuit for the last stage into Paris.

The nine-day women’s event, starting on August 1, will roll out of Lausanne, Switzerland and include its first ever ascent of Mont Ventoux before finishing in Nice.
