HORSE RACING: 54-year-old Lanfranco “Frankie” Dettori has announced that he will retire after riding Wimbledon Hawkeye at this weekend’s Breeders’Cup in San Diego, USA.
Dettori was a three-time British champion jockey, won the Derby twice and rode all seven winners on the Queen Elizabeth Stakes card at Ascot in 1996.
He received a six-month ban for failing a drugs test in 2012 and declared himself bankrupt earlier this year.
MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: Sheffield Steelers cruised to the top of the Elite League on Wednesday evening after brushing aside injury hit Guildford 5-1 while defending champions Belfast kick-started their delayed campaign with a 3-1 win over the Cardiff Devils.
Tomorrow night’s fixtures see Belfast on the road at second-placed Nottingham Panthers, bottom club Fife looking to end their six-match losing run at Manchester and Dundee hosting Guildford.
