Men's Football Student beats his master as Pep's City defeat Sarri's Chelsea

Chelsea 0-2 Man City

A Sergio Aguero brace secured the Community Shield for Manchester City today, as last season’s Premier League winners triumphed over the FA Cup holders.

It was business as usual for Aguero, but on the undercard two young Englishmen also enjoyed the Wembley stage.

When World Cup stars return, Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi and City’s Phil Foden may find themselves on the bench, but the teenagers made a case for more regular inclusion and stood out among more seasoned, high-profile teammates.

Foden set up City’s opener, driving at the heart of a Chelsea defence who backtracked, inviting the young Englishman towards the area. By the time he found Aguero, the striker’s would-be marker, Antonio Rudiger, was closer to his own goalkeeper than he was the Argentinian.

Aguero swung his left boot and, with Willy Caballero’s line of sight blocked by Rudiger, the ball flew into the bottom corner.

Hudson-Odoi had two first-half efforts and the City defence didn’t quite know what to make of his skill and trickery. Claudio Bravo spilled one of these shots, and in another uncertain moment the Chilean goalkeeper saw the ball bounce over his head as he rushed out to gather. He managed to recover on both occasions to save further embarrassment.

Aguero should have doubled his tally earlier but hit the side netting after trying to round Caballero. The former City stopper did well to force him wider than he would have liked.

Foden was also thwarted by the Argentinian after finding himself in a good position, but his shot was too tame.

Aguero’s second eventually arrived thanks to an excellent interception from John Stones. The centre back stepped out of the defence, reading Chelsea like a book. Three passes later City’s all-time top scorer was finding the back of the net.

Maurizio Sarri had been beaten at his own game and this was probably planned given Pep Guardiola’s admiration of the Italian. This became evident last season when Guardiola’s City played Sarri’s Napoli in the Champions League.

Napoli “are one of the best teams I've faced in my career. No doubt about that. Maybe the best,” Guardiola said after that game, which his side won but had to be at their very best.

City weren’t at their best here, but the outcome of Guardiola v Sarri was the same. It will be an intriguing battle between the two similar mindsets but slightly differing styles when they meet in the Premier League and Sarri will hope to learn from this as Guardiola has from him.

"I'm happy Sarri is here. I will learn a lot and see him every weekend. We are going to improve because of his ideas,” said Guardiola recently, and this game saw the lessons put into practice.

"He needs more time but his ideas are already there,” added the Catalan, and he’s right.

The ideas are evidently there, but perhaps the personnel aren’t quite right in a couple of key areas. Luckily for Sarri, he won’t have to play one of his students every week.
