Tribute to Keir Starmer greeted with laughter in the Senedd
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer makes a speech in Downing Street, London, as he said he will resign as leader of the Labour Party and he has informed the King of his decision, June 22, 2026

AIRCRAFT carriers and Sir Keir Starmer were raised to laughter across the Senedd at today’s First Minister’s Questions.

Welsh Labour interim leader Ken Skates’s tribute to the hapless prime minister was greeted with chuckles from other parties when he said: “He was one of the most decent and dignified of all politicians that I’ve known.”

Mr Skates asked if Plaid would like to see Wales as a full member of Nato.

First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth said: “Neither I nor my party has ever advocated or suggested that the UK should pull out of Nato.

“It would of course be for an independent Wales to decide on what kind of association or membership it would have with Nato.”

On military spending, the Labour leader said Mr ap Iorwerth had stated Wales doesn’t need aircraft carriers, and asked if drastic cuts in defence should include cuts in cyber security.

Mr ap Iorwerth said the title of a book was How many aircraft carriers would an independent Wales need? and said the answer is zero.
