Trump to visit non-unionised autoworkers in Michigan following Biden's visit to UAW picket line

FORMER US president Donald Trump is expected to visit autoworkers on strike in Michigan today to win over voters following a visit by his rival, Joe Biden.

President Biden became on Tuesday the first US leader in history to join a picket line, telling members of the United Auto Workers in Detroit that “you deserve the significant raise you need.”

The Democrat encouraged workers to keep fighting for better wages as he competed with his Republican rival, Mr Trump.

The battle for union member support will likely be a big part of the 2024 general election, with both candidates claiming they are the true pro-union option.

Mr Trump is scheduled to deliver a speech at Drake Enterprises, a non-unionised car parts supplier near Detroit.

The businessman, who is currently facing fraud and other charges, was able to secure votes from Democratic strongholds such as Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania in the 2016 election after capitalising on a wedge between unions and the government of the time.

He is seeking to use the economy and inflation this time around.
