UCU launches campaign against government refusing to bail out unis

A CAMPAIGN to persuade the government to bail out bankrupt universities has been launched by the University and College Union (UCU).

The chair of the Office for Students (OfS) Sir Michael Barber said yesterday that it will not intervene to save struggling universities.

The announcement followed reports that three unnamed universities are in difficulties.

UCU is contacting all MPs with a university in their constituency to ask them to oppose plans for non-intervention.

UCU’s Matt Waddup said: “Do the regulator and minister really want to voluntarily reduce our country’s intellectual, social and cultural capital?

“We shall be writing to every MP with a university in their constituency asking if they are happy with this move.

“Allowing universities go to the wall has consequences far beyond just education — universities are often one of the key employers in the area and their impact on the local economy and on local opportunities is difficult to overstate.”
