Air strike by Israel leaves four soldiers wounded

SYRIA hit out at “Israeli aggression” yesterday after four soldiers were wounded in an air strike close to the capital Damascus.

A military source said that the attack had also caused some material damage but insisted that Syrian air defences had “intercepted the aggression and shot down most of the missiles.”

According to Syrian state news agency Sana, the attack came from the direction of Lebanon.

Tel Aviv has escalated an aerial campaign against Syria, claiming that it is targeting Iranian military positions.

But its attacks have routinely destroyed Syrian infrastructure and civilian homes and experts say that the strikes breach international law.

Israel said that yesterday’s attack had “destroyed an arms depot that belongs to the Iranians,” but Damascus denied the assertion.

Iranian forces have been invited into Syria by President Bashar al-Assad to support his armed forces in their fight against jihadist groups seeking to overthrow the government.

Israel rarely confirms its air strikes, but its army has admitted hitting about 50 targets in Syria last year, without providing details.
