US Democrat presidential hopeful Joe Biden chose California Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate on Tuesday, in a choice that has split opinion ahead of November’s election.
Ms Harris became the first black woman and Asian American to stand for a major party in the race for the White House.
The former vice-president described her as “a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country's finest public servants.”
Speaking after her appointment Ms Harris insisted that Mr Biden “can unify the American people because he’s spent his life fighting for us.”
She said she was honoured to run as the nominee for vice-president, saying Mr Biden would “build an America that lives up to our ideals.”
Former president Barack Obama said: “She is more than prepared for the job. She’s spent her career defending our constitution and fighting for folks who need a fair shake.”
However others, including law professor Lara Bazelon, pointed to her record as a former district attorney, accusing her of championing policies that “were part and parcel of a system of mass incarceration that has deeply harmed poor people and communities of colour.”
She was accused of being out of step on issues of racism in the legal system and police brutality.
