BRAZILIAN police have been accused of carrying out a massacre after 18 people were killed during an operation in Rio de Janiero’s largest complex of favelas yesterday.

Investigations are under way after authorities insisted that 16 suspected criminals had been gunned down in confrontations with officers in the Complex de Alemao district.

Video footage shows what some say is evidence of police helicopters firing indiscriminately into densely populated residential areas.
