China and Iran sign 25-year strategic co-operation agreement

CHINA and Iran signed a 25-year strategic co-operation agreement at the weekend.

The pact will reduce the impact of crippling US sanctions on the country and follows a sharp deterioration in Sino-US relations.

The deal incorporates Chinese support for Iran’s oil and mining industries as well as help with building transport infrastructure and boosting agricultural trade.

It will raise pressure on the US to make further concessions if it wishes to re-enter the 2015 deal on Iranian nuclear development, which former US president Donald Trump tore up. Iran has since abandoned compliance with the agreement’s restrictions on its nuclear energy sector.

The hardening stance was also shown in a high-profile visit by Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe to Belgrade on Friday, where he laid flowers in tribute to the three Chinese journalists killed when the United States bombed the country’s embassy to Yugoslavia in its 1999 assault on the country.
