China leads green revolution promising to stop funding coal projects abroad

CHINA pledged on Tuesday to help poorer nations develop green energy projects.

President Xi Jinping told world leaders gathered at the United Nations general assembly in New York that Beijing would also stop funding coal projects overseas, which make a major contribution to carbon emissions worldwide.

“China will step up support for other developing countries in developing green and low-carbon energy and will not build new coal-fired power projects abroad,” he said.

Mr Xi proposed a new global development initiative, which he said must be “equally balanced,” strengthen policy co-ordination among major economies and ensure policy continuity, consistency and sustainability.

“We should foster new growth drivers in the post-Covid era and jointly achieve leapfrog development, staying committed to harmony between man and nature,” the Chinese president said.

Mr Xi’s commitment was welcomed by British government minister Alok Sharma, who will chair the Cop26 climate change conference opening in Glasgow on October 31.

Beijing has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, with peak emissions by 2030, and has already reduced the number of coal-powered projects forming part of China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative.
