China tells US not to damage relations with Taiwan trip on 50th anniversary of Shanghai Communique

CHINA reacted angrily today to the visit of a delegation of retired US defence officials who arrived in Taiwan.

Former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff — the operational supremo in the US war machine — Mike Mullen heads the five-person mission appointed by President Joe Biden to enhance “co-operation in various fields” and “maintain regional peace and stability.”

Beijing said the visit threatened serious damage to US-China relations, coming a day after the 50th anniversary of the Shanghai Communique, which opened formal diplomatic ties.

It advised the US to “absorb wisdom” from the agreement, in which US president Richard Nixon accepted that “there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China.” The February 28 1972 accord saw the US drop its veto on China taking its seat at the UN security council, which had until then been held by Taiwan, still ruled by Mao Zedong’s defeated arch-rival Chiang Kai-shek until his death in 1975.
