Communist Party of Ireland backs calls for peaceful resolution in Ukraine

THE Communist Party of Ireland expressed its solidarity with Sabina Coyne Higgins after she called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

Ms Higgins, who is married to Irish President Michael D Higgins, has faced a backlash after publishing a letter in national media last month.

But the Communist Party praised her for her principled stand, which it said was “in marked contrast to the snivelling and shoneen role of the Irish political, military and media Establishment.

“What is needed to end Nato’s proxy war with Russia is a de-escalation strategy, to demand a ceasefire and peace negotiations,” the communists said.

The party condemned the strategy and aims of the ruling elite, warning that it would only prolong the violence and suffering of the Russian and Ukrainian peoples.

“As in all wars, it is working people, the poor, the aged, women and children who bear a disproportionate share of casualties,” the communists said.

“Those most vocal in promoting and encouraging war rarely end up on the front line and rarely suffer any consequences for their actions.”

They called on all political forces to ensure that neutrality is enshrined in the Irish constitution and to become active in the struggle for global peace.

“Sabina Coyne Higgins has challenged the Establishment consensus and once again for this we should all be grateful,” the party said.

“Every voice raised for peace can only bring the senseless war to a speedy end.”
