Congress demands dismissal of ‘white-supremacist-in-chief’ as Trump impeached for second time

DONALD TRUMP became on Wednesday the first US president in history to be impeached twice as the House of Representatives heard calls for the dismissal of “the white supremacist-in-chief.”

Democrat Cori Bush, a member of the so-called Squad of progressive legislators, was booed by Republicans as she made her speech during a stormy debate on impeachment.

“If we fail to remove a white supremacist president who incited a white supremacist insurrection, it’s communities like Missouri’s first district that suffer the most,” she said.

“The 117th Congress must understand that we have a mandate to legislate in defence of black lives.

“The first step in that process is to root out white supremacy, starting with impeaching the white supremacist-in-chief.”

Republicans were criticised for making crass comparisons between the Capitol Hill riot last week and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Wisconsin Representative Glenn Grothman said: “You don’t understand why they were here. They are scared to death we are going to go back to the days without Donald Trump, of hundreds of thousands of people crossing the border each month.

“They are scared to death nobody is going to keep our manufacturing here, they are scared to death nobody is going to fight the cancel culture as we head towards an era when some things cannot be said, they are scared to death that the majority party got here by teaming up with Black Lives Matter, founded by Marxists.”

Mr Trump was charged with “incitement of insurrection” for his role in the riot.

His impeachment hearing will take place after his successor Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration next week.

Mr Trump’s conviction requires a two-thirds majority in the 100-seat Senate, meaning the support of 17 Republicans is needed.
