DUP leader reiterates threat to collapse Stormont over Northern Ireland Protocol

SIR JEFFREY DONALDSON has written to Democratic Unionist Party members in Northern Ireland reiterating his threat to collapse the Stormont assembly if the Irish Sea “border” with Britain is not removed.

The DUP leader criticised British Prime Minister Boris Johnson for his lack of action on the issue, which he said was not sustainable.

In the letter, Sir Jeffrey said: “Last Tuesday I met with Lord Frost, the UK negotiator [with the European Union] on the Northern Ireland Protocol, and on Wednesday I was challenging the Prime Minister in the House of Commons about the lack of movement on the Irish Sea border being removed … His answer was a standard reply with little sign of movement …

“The Prime Minister must realise that if there is no progress then, as I said, on September 9 our continued participation in political institutions that are being used to impose the protocol is not sustainable.”

Sinn Fein vice-president Michelle O'Neill described Sir Jeffrey’s latest threats as “more dysfunction and recklessness from the DUP.”

Collapsing Stormont would “disrupt critical budget allocations needed to bolster our health service, tackle waiting lists and support health workers,” she said. “The DUP owns Brexit, and it owns the damage it is doing.”
