Extinction Rebellion symbols send global visual message

EXTINCTION Rebellion symbols appeared across the globe over the weekend as part of the environmental group’s campaign for international action on climate change.

The group said aerial images of its logo sent a visual message that “time is running out and that internationalist solidarity is essential for tackling the climate and ecological emergency.”

Each of the giant extinction symbols “is a beautiful and unique artwork,” campaigners said.

They included a sand sculpture on Mount Maunganui beach in New Zealand, a projection on tower of the Costanera Centre in Chile and a symbol made from human bodies in Central Park, New York City.

Extinction Rebellion Chile spokesman Matt Maynard said that four lanes of traffic were blocked near the Costanera Centre tower.

“It was the first time Chile has organised such a disruptive action of civil disobedience.

“The rush-hour drivers were greeted with apologies, explanations, cake and a massive reminder projected onto South America’s tallest building that time is running out.”

Extinction Rebellion warns of an ecological crisis that will cause runaway climate change, leading to societal collapse and mass death, unless urgent action is taken.

The group believes “it is a citizen’s duty to rebel, using peaceful civil disobedience, when faced with criminal inactivity by their government.”
