Greek neonazi MEP jailed after extradition from Brussels

GREEK neonazi Ioannis Lagos was jailed in the high-security Domokos prison today — a month after his immunity from prosecution as a member of the European Parliament was lifted.

He started his 13-year jail term following his extradition from Belgium, where he had spent two weeks in prison after being detained under a European arrest warrant.

The former nightclub bouncer and ex-leading member of the fascist Golden Dawn party arrived in Athens at around 3.20pm on Saturday, accompanied by five Greek police officials.

Mr Lagos had initially opposed his extradition to Greece but dropped his appeal and was flown into the Greek capital, appearing before the prosecutor this morning.

Authorities rejected his request to be held at a prison in the Greek capital.

He was elected as a Golden Dawn MEP in 2019, but sat as an independent in Brussels after leaving the party.

Mr Lagos was one of more than 50 people, including the entire leadership of Golden Dawn, who were convicted last year of a range of crimes including running a criminal organisation, murder, assault, and illegal weapons possession.
