Greek PM condemns acid attack by priest on seven bishops during drug trafficking hearing

GREEK Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he was deeply saddened today after a priest threw acid on seven bishops of the Greek Orthodox Church.

The suspect was arrested on Wednesday after launching the attack during a disciplinary hearing which could have seen him expelled from the church over drug-trafficking allegations.

The bishops were considering defrocking the 36-year-old, who was allegedly caught with 1.8 grams of cocaine in June 2018.

Greek newspaper Ta Nea said that the priest had brought a large bottle of corrosive liquid to the hearing, which took place at the Petraki monastery in the capital, Athens.

Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou also condemned the attack.

“I express my disgust for this unprecedented incident and wish the victims a speedy recovery,” she said.

Mr Mitsotakis said that he had spoken to the head of the Greek Church, Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens, and offered the government’s support.

“The state will offer all possible medical assistance for the victims’ speedy recovery,” he said.
