Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam will not seek a second five-year term, she announced today.
“There’s only one consideration and that is family. I have told everyone before that family is my first priority,” Ms Lam told a regular press briefing. “They think it’s time for me to go home.”
Chief Secretary John Lee was reportedly set to resign and enter the contest to replace her, although he had yet not made an official comment.
Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul Chan and former leader Leung Chun Ying were also named as potential candidates in local media reports, although neither announced a bid.
Ms Lam came to power in 2017, promising to unite Hong Kong. But two years later, she faced massive anti-China protests, some violent, causing prolonged instability.
She has also faced criticism over her recent handling of the coronavirus pandemic, with a recent surge in infections delaying leadership elections.
Ms Lam is due to leave office on June 30.
