Ilan Omar hits back at ‘threats’ to remove her seat on the US House foreign affairs committee

PROGRESSIVE Democrat Congresswoman Ilhan Omar hit back on Wednesday at “threats” to strip her of her seat on the United States House foreign affairs committee.

Ms Omar, the first Muslim woman to wear a hijab in the House of Representatives, called the threats by Republican House leader Kevin McCarthy part of a “stream of hate” she has experienced throughout her political career.

Mr McCarthy, one of the top contenders for House Majority Speaker, vowed to remove Ms Omar from her seat, over her criticism of Israel, during a speech to the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual meeting last Saturday.

Ms Omar said: “From the moment I was elected, the Republican Party has made it their mission to use fear, xenophobia, Islamophobia and racism to target me on the House floor and through millions of dollars of campaign ads.”

“At the same time, they have openly tolerated anti-semitism, anti-Muslim hate and racism in their own party.”

Ms Omar also said that the “hate” she has received from Republicans has “led to hundreds of death threats and credible plots against me and my family.”

Earlier this month, Ms Omar was re-elected to represent Minnesota’s 5th congressional district.
