Irish Communists call for united Ireland as Brexit looms

IRISH communists have called for the unity of all forces who oppose imperialist domination in fighting for a united Ireland as Brexit looms nearer.

The Communist Party of Ireland (CPI) claimed the rupture with the European Union continues to expose deep fissures within the British ruling class and British social democracy.

The party warned that Brexit also exposed the subservient relationship of the Irish ruling class towards the EU, allowing the Irish national democratic question to be exploited by both pro and anti-Brexit forces in Britain.

“Neither side in this struggle cares for the working class of Ireland,” a party statement warned. “The only lasting solution is to end partition and to end the domination of both British and EU imperialism.”

The CPI continues to oppose any border across Ireland asserting “that any boundary between the British state and the European Union should be at the borders of Britain itself.”

It called for “the unity of all those forces that oppose imperialist domination” to work together to end division and partition and “articulate the possibilities of what a new Ireland would hold for the working class of Ireland.”
