Far-right Naftali Bennett could head ‘unity government’ that could unseat Netanyahu

ISRAELI Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be on his way out of office after far-right millionaire Naftali Bennett agreed to support a “unity government” which would unseat the country’s longest-serving premier.

Mr Bennett announced his decision in a televised address on Sunday. It could see Yair Lapid of the Yesh Atid party form a coalition government after the March 23 election ended in deadlock.

He has until tomorrow to form an administration, with Mr Bennett’s decision a major boost. The six seats of Mr Bennett’s Yamina Party in the 120-member Knesset give the former defence chief the role of kingmaker.

One scenario would see Mr Bennett replace Mr Netanyahu as prime minister with Mr Lapid taking on the role at a later date as part of a power-sharing arrangement.

Mr Bennett said he had thrown his weight behind the Yair Lapid leader to prevent a fifth election in just over a year and bring some political stability to the country.

Mr Netanyahu, who has faced calls to resign over a bribery and corruption scandal which is subject to an ongoing court case, said Mr Bennett is instigating “the fraud of the century.”
