Israeli military destroys homes of Palestinian men accused of deadly attack on settler

Human rights group warns of third Palestinian child killed by Israeli forces this year

THE Israeli military said today that it had demolished the family homes of two Palestinians accused of carrying out a deadly shooting attack in the occupied West Bank last year.

The residences of Mohammed Jaradat and Jit Jaradat in the occupied West Bank were demolished on Monday, the military said.

The men are accused of shooting at a car driving near the dismantled illegal settlement of Homesh, killing a Jewish seminary student and wounding two other settlers in December.

During today’s demolition, the military said armed Palestinians fired at the troops, who fired back. The military also said that dozens of Palestinians threw stones, firebombs and grenades at the troops, who responded with live fire and other means. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Rights organisations have condemned the Israeli government’s widespread use of home demolitions, saying they are a form of collective punishment.

On Monday rights group Defence for Children International: Palestine (DCIP) reported the death of a third Palestinian child killed by the Israeli military so far this year.

An Israeli soldier shot and killed 15-year-old Yamen Nafez Mahmoud Khanafseh at about 8.30pm on March 6 near an Israeli military base in Abu Dis, east of Jerusalem in the occupied West Bank.

“Israeli forces routinely unlawfully kill Palestinian children with impunity, using excessive force and unjustified intentional lethal force,” said DCIP’s accountability programme director Ayed Abu Eqtaish.

“If a child is suspected of committing a criminal act, they should be apprehended in accordance with international standards and afforded due process of law.”

Yamen is the third Palestinian child killed by Israeli forces in 2022, all within a three-week period, according to documentation collected by DCIP.

Israeli forces shot and killed 13-year-old Mohammad Rezq Shehadeh Salah on February 22 in Al-Khader, south-west of Bethlehem.

And an Israeli sniper shot and killed 16-year-old Mohammad Akram Ali Taher Abu Salah on February 13 while Israeli forces deployed in the village of Silat al-Harithiya, near Jenin, in the northern occupied West Bank.
