Israeli military tear gas Palestinian protesters in occupied West Bank, clearing way for far-right settlers

PALESTINIAN protesters clashed with the Israeli military in the West Bank today as occupying troops cleared the way for far-right settlers to demonstrate.

Paramedics said they treated at least eight civilians who were struck by rubber bullets or tear gas canisters fired by Israeli soldiers in the villages of Burqa and Bazaria.

Palestinian youths burned tyres and hurled stones at the soldiers in response.

Palestine TV cameraman Fadi Yasin was hit by a rubber bullet while covering the clashes.

The Palestinians were protesting against the closure of roads by the army to allow a march led by Jewish extremists to take place.

The several thousand Israelis marched to the site of a demolished settlement, one of many illegally built on Palestinian lands, calling on the government to rebuild it.

While the military did not formally authorise the march, soldiers closed roads and prevented Palestinians from reaching the area.

Tensions have surged in the region recently. On Monday, Hamas fired a rocket from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel for the first time in months, and there have been days of clashes at al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, with police attacking Muslim visitors.

The Israeli military has launched raids across the West Bank in reprisal for a spate of 14 killings of citizens in Israel.

At least 26 Palestinians, including the five who carried out the attacks, have been killed in recent weeks.

An unarmed woman and a lawyer who appears to have been a bystander were also among those killed.

An 18-year-old woman died late on Monday of wounds sustained during earlier clashes near the West Bank city of Jenin.
