Kabul explosions kills at least six, including children

AT LEAST six people, including students, were killed in Kabul today in two explosions targeting schools in the Afghan capital.

The blasts are being investigated and more casualties were feared, with several of the wounded in a serious condition.

The blasts occurred inside the Abdul Rahim Shaheed High School and near the Mumtaz Education Centre, both in the predominately Shi’ite area of Dasht-e-Barchi.

Guards in the narrow street leading to the two-storey secondary school said they saw 10 casualties.

An AP journalist said he witnessed walls splattered with blood, burnt notebooks and discarded children’s shoes inside the school.

According to witnesses, a suicide bomber blew himself up inside the compound, which can house up to 1,000 students.

It was not immediately clear how many children were in the school at the time of the explosion.

No-one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Save the Children in Afghanistan issued a statement strongly condemning the attack, adding that “no school should be deliberately targeted, and no child should fear physical harm at or on the way to school.”
