Kerala to defy India's Hindu chauvinist government by restoring censored parts of school textbooks
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives on the opening day of the monsoon session of the Indian parliament in New Delhi, India, July 20, 2023

KERALA will defy India’s Hindu chauvinist government from next month by teaching recently censored textbook content in schools.

The Communist-led state government says that after the break for the harvest festival of Onam ends, schools will start using republished textbooks that include passages removed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training earlier this year.

Narendra Modi’s government has been accused of censoring history by removing references to India’s Muslim heritage and to the crimes of Hindu extremists, including the paramilitary RSS — from which Mr Modi’s BJP party originated.
