FRENCH President Emmanuel Macron vowed at the weekend that Brexit would not be allowed to affect Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) subsidies to French farms.
Environmentalists have attacked the CAP for allocating subsidies based on the amount of land farmed, so the policy disproportionately benefits industrial-scale agriculture and harms small generalist farms.
But Mr Macron said that cuts to the programme would make action on climate change harder.
“It’s a policy of the future, because if we want this climate, environmental and sanitary transition to be a success, we need to change how we produce,” Mr Macron told a group of trade-union representatives.
EU member states failed to reach agreement on the bloc’s budget on Friday, with Britain’s departure creating a €75 billion (£60bn) hole in the finances.
Poorer member states pushed for spending to be maintained at similar levels, but rich states led by Germany declined to pay more than they do already.
