VETERAN rock musician Neil Young launched legal proceedings against US President Donald Trump’s campaign team on Tuesday, saying that he doesn’t want his music used by a “campaign of ignorance and hate.”
He cited two of his songs, Rockin’ in the Free World and Devil’s Sidewalk, which have been used numerous times at campaign rallies and other political events.
Mr Young insisted that he was not suing to “disrespect the rights and opinions of American citizens, who are free to support the candidate of their choosing.”
But he said that he could not “in good conscience cannot allow his music to be used as a ‘theme song’ for a divisive, un-American campaign of ignorance and hate.”
Mr Young has continuously opposed the use of his work by Mr Trump since 2015, when the latter first announced his presidential bid while Rockin’ in the Free World was playing.
The Canadian-born musician filed the lawsuit in a Manhattan federal court, seeking up to $150,000 (£113,000) in damages for each infringement.
Mr Trump’s campaign team insisted that it had sought permission to use the tracks.
