Netherlands criticised for agreeing to dismantle historic bridge to let Jeff Bezos's new superyacht through Rotterdam

DUTCH authorities have come under fire after agreeing to dismantle a historic bridge to allow a superyacht belonging to Amazon tycoon Jeff Bezos to pass.

The Koningshaven bridge over the Rhine, commonly known as De Hef, was built in 1878 and is now a national monument. Following restoration in 2017, officials said it would never be taken apart.

But Mr Bezos has had a huge yacht built in the South Holland town of Alblasserdam, reportedly at a cost of €430 million (£360m) and the vessel is too large to pass under the bridge.

The plutocrat and shipbuilder Oceanco have reportedly agreed to cover the cost of dismantling and restoring the bridge, but threatening a historic monument for the convenience of a billionaire known for tax evasion and exploiting his workforce has sparked anger.

GreenLeft party politician Stephan Leewis said: “This man has made his money by cutting staff, evading taxes, avoiding regulations, and now we have to demolish our beautiful national monument? That’s really a bridge too far.”
