Palestinian prisoners' hunger strike ends in victory as Israeli authorities capitulate to their demands

A HUNGER strike by Palestinian political prisoners has ended in victory after eight days as Israeli authorities bowed to their demands.

The “Battle of Dignity 2” was suspended on Monday after prison authorities agreed to the installation of public telephones in sections of the jails. Inmates will be able to use the phones three times a week for 15 minutes, according to the hunger strike’s leaders.

Plans to instal phone-jamming systems which were central to the prisoners’ complaints have been dropped and sanctions imposed over the last year will be lifted.

Under the agreement struck with representatives of the Palestinian prisoners, women will be transferred from Damon jail, where conditions were reported to be “unsuitable for human life.

Hundreds of inmates joined the hunger strike in protest against harsh treatment by Israeli prison authorities.

Across a number of Israeli jails, Palestinian prisoners have been attacked with tear gas, dogs and rubber-coated steel bullets during raids, leaving hundreds hospitalised this year alone.

The Palestinian Prisoners Club warned that the recent attacks have been the “most severe in years.”

The Palestinian National and Islamic Forces coalition said at a press conference in Gaza City that, while the hunger strike had ended in victory, “the battle is not over,” warning that previous agreements have been repeatedly broken by the Israeli prisons administration.

The coalition praised the prisoners for “their great sacrifices [which] underline that freedom and dignity are human rights that cannot be denied.”

It also thanked those in Gaza, the West Bank and “supporters of freedom around the world,” including journalists, who stood in solidarity with the hunger strikers.
