Palestinian student detained in Tel Aviv during anti-administrative detention protests

A PALESTINIAN student was detained on Sunday as protests took place in Tel Aviv against administrative detention orders as part of Palestinian Prisoners Day.

About 50 Israelis took part in the demonstration at the headquarters of the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security agency, which is accused of torturing prisoners.

Some of the protesters blocked the road in protest at the use of administrative detention orders by Israeli courts.

About 500 such orders have been issued against Palestinians, permitting them to be held indefinitely without charge or trial and with evidence against them kept secret.

Many have responded by engaging in a boycott of Israel’s court, among them Israeli activist Neta Golan, who is subject to an active arrest warrant.

Police, however, targeted the only Palestinians among the group, with those present saying that the student was “violently beaten” before being taken into custody.

He was released later after paying bail of 1,000 shekels (£237) and signing a document agreeing not to attend any protests for the next two weeks.

One participant said: “What happened best proves the reason for our demonstration today. If you are Palestinian, you have no security anywhere, not even in your home. It is apartheid.”
