Peru declares a state of emergency as protests against last week's coup continue
Police arrive where supporters of ousted Peruvian President Pedro Castillo protest his detention in Arequipa, Peru, Wednesday, December 14, 2022

PROTESTS have continued across Peru, prompting the right-wing US-backed coup regime to declare a nationwide state of emergency for 30 days.

Defence Minister Luis Otarola Penaranda said the nationwide protests against the ousting of president Pedro Castillo “require a forceful and authoritative response from the government.”

The declaration suspends the rights of assembly and freedom of movement and gives powers to the police and military to search people’s homes without a warrant or permission.
