DEMONSTRATIONS were held in more than 20 towns and cities across Italy on Saturday as the country’s economy continues to decline.
Thousands gathered in the Italian capital Rome in a protest called by the CGIL trade union confederation while other anti-government demonstrations were held in Genoa, Trieste and Cagliari.
Italian workers are angered over the sending of arms to Ukraine and sanctions on Russia which they say are damaging the country.
Last month, a national strike was held under the slogan “lower your guns, raise our wages” as economists warned that the serious economic contraction could see the country slide into recession.
Prime Minister Mario Draghi has considered a state of emergency over the economy and raised the possibility of cancelling next year’s general election.
He will address the Italian Senate tomorrow amid talk of a government crisis as lawmakers complain that there has been no debate on key issues including the impact on Italy of sanctions on Russia.
Inflation is running rampant while high unemployment and rising energy prices means more strikes and protests are expected.
