AT LEAST 10 people were killed in a suspected jihadist attack on a humanitarian convoy in Burkina Faso on Sunday, the government has confirmed.
According to local police, five officers and five aid workers were shot dead in the attack as they returned from the town of Foube, where they had been delivering food aid.
The government has confirmed that a further 30 people were killed in an attack on a cattle market in Kompienga on Saturday. Gunmen arrived on motorbikes before opening fire on the lunchtime crowds.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks but the government blamed “terrorists,” a term used for the Isis and al-Qaida linked jihadist groups that plague the Sahel region.
More than 800,000 people have been displaced in Burkina Faso in the last five years due to an upsurge in jihadist activity.
The UN has warned that the country, along with Mali and Niger, is becoming the new hotspot for the Islamist groups.
