SNP's Westminster leader Blackford in hot water over telecoms windfall

The sale of Commsworld — which the Ross, Skye and Loachaber MP is chairman of — would not have occurred had Labour won the election given the party’s nationalised broadband plans

THE SNP’s Westminster leader Ian Blackford has been urged to pay back his share of a multimillion pound cash windfall which he is likely to receive as a direct outcome of the general election result.

The Ross, Skye and Loachaber MP is set to benefit from the £45 million sale of the telecoms company he chairs.

The part-time businessman is chairman of Commsworld which is expected to announce a takeover deal with the private equity division of Lloyds Banking Group.

Mr Blackford is reported to have a 4 per cent stake in the business, which he joined in 2006.

This could mean a significant cash windfall for the politician after the deal was previously in doubt.

The sale would not have occurred had Labour won the election given the party’s nationalised broadband plans, leading to claims the SNP MP has directly benefited from Mr Johnson’s election victory.

Mr Blackford has now been encouraged to return money to those who donated to his re-election campaign.

Scottish Labour MSP Neil Findlay said: “While the people of Scotland are now looking down the barrel at years of vicious Tory cuts and the continued scandal of universal credit, Ian Blackford, the ‘simple crofter,’ will be able to find solace in the huge windfall he will receive from cashing in on the sale of one of his many financial interests.

“This is the same Ian Blackford who asked members of the public to pay for his election campaigning via a crowdfunding appeal.

“Blackford should now pay back every penny to the people who gave their hard earned money to this millionaires’ election campaign.”

The SNP has been approached for comment.
