Syrian capital rocked by repeated explosions

SYRIAN capital Damascus was rocked by repeated explosions in the early hours of today, but there has been no immediate statement on the source or target at time of print.

Similar incidents in the past have usually been attributed to Israeli air strikes, with Syrian air defences responding by shooting down missiles.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based opposition war monitor group, said the explosion came from a warehouse storing rockets for Iran-backed militias, though it could not confirm whether there had been an Israeli strike.

The Observatory said it was still unclear whether anyone was wounded or killed in the explosion.

Israel, which has vowed to stop Iranian entrenchment in its neighbour, has carried out hundreds of strikes on targets in government-controlled parts of Syria in recent years, but it rarely acknowledges them.

Syria has also seen a recent surge in violent attacks by Isis, with the group committing one of its deadliest attacks this year on Friday night.

Isis claimed responsibility over the weekend for the ambush in eastern Syria that killed at least 33 soldiers and wounded others.

“Our jihad is going on until doomsday,” it said in a statement.
