Talks on disarmament begin in Ethiopia's Tigray

TALKS on peace and disarmament between Ethiopian and Tigrayan leaders have begun inside the war-torn region, Ethiopian authorities said yesterday.

Following successful talks in Kenya, the ability to hold talks within Ethiopia itself is seen as a sign of progress in concluding the two-year war, the world’s largest ongoing conflict.

UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres said in a meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed yesterday that the casualties from the battle between Tigrayan regional authorities and the Ethiopian state exceed those from the Russia-Ukraine war, with estimates that hundreds of thousands have died.

A ceasefire deal signed on November 2 said Tigray will disarm its forces within 30 days, but Tigrayan officials have since said they cannot implement this until troops from Eritrea, a neighbouring state allied to the Ethiopian government, and the Amhara region within Ethiopia are withdrawn.
