THAILAND’S top diplomat said today that he met ousted Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi in detention over the weekend.
Don Pramudwinai said Ms Suu Kyi told him she was open to talks to resolve the crisis in her strife-torn nation.
Mr Don is the only government official outside of Myanmar to have met Ms Suu Kyi since she was detained with other officials when the army seized power from her elected government on February 1, 2021.
He told his counterparts in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, who are meeting in Indonesia’s capital, that Ms Suu Kyi was in good health when he met her on Sunday.
Mr Don told reporters in Jakarta that the ousted leader “encourages dialogue.”
He added: “Obviously we’re trying to find a way to settle with Myanmar.”
The military takeover and the crackdown on the armed resistance plunged the country into deadly chaos.
Western and European governments have imposed sanctions on Myanmar’s military government and demanded the immediate release of Ms Suu Kyi and other political detainees.
Mr Don told reporters that his government wanted to see “all association members” back in the group.
Myanmar’s military regime has reportedly killed more than 1,700 people and arbitrarily arrested over 13,000.
