Thousands protest in Jordan over energy agreement with Israel

THOUSANDS of Jordanians have protested against a water and energy deal with Israel, raising slogans in support of Palestine.

Trade unionists and opposition parties took to the streets of the capital Amman on Friday, denouncing the new solar power agreement as “treason.”

Under the deal, Jordan will supply power to Israel via a solar farm to be constructed in the south of the country by the United Arab Emirates.

In return, Israel will supply 200 million cubic metres of water to Jordan, the second-most water-scarce country in the world.

The agreement has provoked widespread anger among Jordanians.

“This deal is aimed at linking Jordan with the zionist entity completely,” opposition figure Ali Abu Sukkar warned. “It is not a trade deal, it is a normalisation deal that is shameful and humiliating.”

Thirty-six students were detained last week during a brutal clampdown by the Jordanian authorities.

A memorandum calling for a review of the deal sponsored by MP Khalil Atiya has been signed by 75 of his parliamentary colleagues.

He said that unless the declaration of principles that established the agreement is scrapped, the government could face a no-confidence vote.
