Three French soldiers killed by bomb in Mali

THREE French soldiers were killed in Mali on Monday when their vehicle hit an improvised bomb, the French presidency has confirmed in a statement.

They were travelling in the Hombori area of the central Mopti province when the roadside bomb went off.

French defence minister Florence Parly said the soldiers were working “in an areas where terrorist groups are attacking civilians and threatening regional stability.”

At least 47 French soldiers have been killed in Mali since the country began military operations in the Sahel region in 2013 in a bid to drive back Islamist militia that had overrun large swathes of the country.

A military coup earlier this year saw the ousting of president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

An 18-month transitional government was established in September until elections can be held.

Mali remains one of the world’s poorest nations. Some 4.3 million of its 18.4 million population rely on humanitarian aid, an increase of 1.1m from last year.

A recent United Nations report warned of war crimes committed against civilians by both Islamist militia and Malian soldiers, recommending the establishment of a special criminal court to hold those responsible to account.
