TRIBUTES have been paid to a “hero of the Vietnamese people’s army” Kostas Sarantidis, who died in Athens on Friday aged 94.
Also known as Nguyen Van Lap, he received many honours from the Hanoi government in recognition of his work promoting Greek-Vietnamese relations and the fight against colonialism.
Born in Thessaloniki in 1927, Mr Sarantidis was detained by the Nazis during the occupation of Greece but escaped and made his way to Vienna.
Barred from returning home, a group of Greek Brigaders came to Britain and founded the League for Democracy in Greece – a movement that carried the flame of anti-fascist resistance from the 1930s through the cold war and beyond. ALI BASSAM ZAHID tells the story
