Trump ditched Iran deal to spite Obama

US PRESIDENT Donald Trump abandoned the Iran nuclear deal to spite his predecessor Barack Obama, a leaked memo suggested today.

Written by Britain’s former ambassador to the US Kim Darroch, the memo described Mr Trump’s decision as an act of “diplomatic vandalism.”

It is the second memo to be leaked this month — the first criticised Mr Trump’s administration describing him as "inept," "insecure" and “incompetent” resulting in Mr Darroch resignation.

The latest memo remarks that the Republican leader appeared to be abandoning the deal for “personal reasons” as it had been agreed by his Democrat predecessor.

Mr Darroch also suggested the White House lacked a “day-after” strategy on what its next steps should be after withdrawing from the deal.

Under the deal, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear activities in return for the lifting of economic sanctions which had hamstrung the country’s finances.

Mr Trump said he did not think that the agreement went far enough and reinstated sanctions after withdrawing from it in May 2018.
