Probe into Trump Organisation has become criminal investigation, says attorney general’s office

A PROBE into the Trump Organisation has now become a criminal investigation, the New York State attorney general’s office said on Tuesday.

“We are now actively investigating the Trump Organisation in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA [district attorney],” spokesman Fabien Levy said in a statement.

Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jnr has been investigating the company run by former US president Donald Trump for more than two years. The probe has focused on business dealings before Mr Trump entered the White House and included a look at hush-money payments paid to women on Trump’s behalf.

Mr Vance’s office has said in papers filed to the court that it has uncovered “possibly extensive and protracted criminal conduct,” including tax and insurance fraud and falsification of business records.

A separate investigation is being carried out by New York State Attorney General Letitia James into whether the Trump Organisation falsely reported property values to secure loans and obtain economic and tax benefits.

The Republican former president has repeatedly dismissed the investigations as witch-hunts conducted by Democrats.
