US accuses Iran of 'dangerous and provocative actions' in international waters

THE United States navy today accused Iran of “dangerous and provocative actions” in the Persian Gulf.

The US claimed that 11 Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) navy vessels had repeatedly conducted “harassing” approaches to six US navy and coastguard ships in  international waters near Kuwait.

The US vessels were claimed to be involved in “routine” military exercises with US Army Apache attack helicopters.

According to the US Navy, the IRGC vessels crossed the bows and sterns of their vessels at “extremely close range and high speeds,” with one IRGC boat allegedly passing within 10 yards of a US cutter.

The US navy said that it had sounded multiple warnings but received no response, and that the “dangerous and provocative actions” had risked collision.

Iran had made no comment as the Star went to press.

The incident came a day after armed men, allegedly IRGC personnel, seized a Hong Kong-flagged tanker in the Gulf of Oman and redirected it into Iranian waters before releasing it.

The US has accused Tehran of attacking tankers in the Gulf and launching missiles at oil facilities in Saudi Arabia, allegations that Ian denies.
